Best Sensory Play Activities for 2-Year-Olds: A Nursery Practitioner’s Guide

As a nursery practitioner, I see every day just how much children learn through their senses. At around two years old, toddlers are at such an exciting stage of development — they’re curious about everything, eager to explore, and learning at an incredible pace. One of the very best ways to support that growth is through sensory play.

If you’re a parent wondering how to keep your engaged (and maybe buy yourself a few minutes of calm!), this guide is packed with practical sensory play ideas you can try at home. Many of these are activities I use in my own nursery setting, adapted so they work brilliantly in a kitchen, bathroom, or garden.

Why Sensory Play Matters So Much at Age 2

Between the , your child is hitting some major developmental milestones. They’re refining their fine motor skills, building language, learning to problem-solve, and beginning to understand concepts like full and empty, big and small, wet and dry.

Sensory play supports all of this. When a toddler scoops rice into a cup, they’re practising hand-eye coordination. When they describe how oats feel between their fingers, they’re developing vocabulary. When they pour water from one jug to another, they’re exploring early maths concepts. It also aligns beautifully with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework, particularly the areas of physical development, communication and language, and understanding the world.

In my nursery, I’ve found that children who have regular access to sensory activities tend to be more confident, more focused, and better at regulating their emotions. The good news? You don’t need fancy equipment to get started — just a few simple materials and a willingness to embrace a bit of mess!

6 Sensory Play Activities

1. Rice and Pasta Filling Tray Play

This is one of the simplest and most effective sensory setups you can create. Pour dried rice or pasta shapes into a shallow tray and add scoops, cups, funnels, and small containers. Your toddler will spend ages filling, pouring, and transferring — all fantastic for fine motor development and concentration.

I love pairing rice trays with themed figures. For example, our Farm Animals Filling Trays are perfect for imaginative play alongside the scooping and pouring. You can also try hiding small toys in the rice for a treasure hunt — toddlers absolutely love the surprise element. Browse our full range of Sensory Filling Trays for more ideas.

2. Water Play with Boats and Pouring Jugs

Water play is a nursery staple for good reason. It’s calming, endlessly fascinating, and introduces early science concepts like floating and sinking. Fill a washing-up bowl or storage tub with warm water and let your toddler experiment.

Add some 3D-printed Boats (at an affordable price) and a Pouring Jug and you’ve got yourself a proper water play station. In my nursery, I often add a few drops of food colouring to the water to make it even more visually engaging. Toddlers love pouring water in and out of boats, watching them bob about, and figuring out how to fill the jug to the very top. 3. Sand Play with Sieves

Whether you use a garden sandpit, a tray of kinetic sand, or even a bowl of plain play sand indoors, sand play is wonderful for sensory exploration. The texture alone is incredibly stimulating for little hands.

Add a Sand & Water Sieve Set and your toddler can practise sieving, watching the sand trickle through the holes. It’s mesmerising for them and brilliant for hand strength and coordination. You’ll find more tools in our Sand & Water Play collection — all 3D printed in eco-friendly PLA plastic.

4. Colour Sorting with Animal Figures

Colour sorting is a lovely Montessori-inspired activity that combines sensory exploration with early maths skills. Set out a few coloured bowls or plates and give your toddler a selection of animal figures to sort by colour.

Our Farm Animals Filling Trays come in a range of cheerful colours, making them ideal for this activity. At two, children are often just beginning to name and recognise colours, so this is a gentle, playful way to reinforce that learning. I find that using animal figures makes the sorting feel like a game rather than a task — “Can the blue cow go in the blue bowl?”

5. Messy Play with Oats

If you’re not quite ready for the full paint-and-glitter experience, oats are a wonderful starting point for messy play. They’re cheap, easy to clean up, and safe if your toddler decides to taste-test (as they inevitably will!).

Spread a generous layer of porridge oats in a tray or on a plastic tablecloth on the floor. Add spoons, cups, and some animal figures for a farm-themed setup. You can also mix in a little water to change the texture — toddlers find the transformation from dry and crumbly to wet and sticky absolutely fascinating. This is a great activity for children who are a bit hesitant about getting messy, because oats feel gentle and non-threatening.

6. Bath Time Sensory Fun with Floating Toys

Don’t overlook bath time as a sensory play opportunity! It’s a ready-made water play session that happens every day. Adding a few engaging toys can turn an ordinary bath into a rich sensory experience.

Our Floating Starfish is a real favourite — toddlers love pushing it under the water and watching it pop back up. Pair it with pouring cups and a jug, and you’ve got a brilliant end-of-day wind-down activity that’s also educational. All our Bath & Water Play toys are 3D printed from PLA, which is biodegradable and eco-friendly.

Tips for Managing the Mess

I know “messy play” can feel a bit daunting at home. In my nursery, we have easy-wipe floors and overalls — most homes don’t! Here are some practical tips that really help:

  • Use a shower curtain or old bedsheet under the tray to catch spills. You can shake it straight into the bin afterwards.
  • Undress your toddler down to a nappy for particularly messy activities — it saves on laundry and they love the freedom.
  • Play outside when you can. A tray of rice on the patio is much easier to sweep up than rice on the carpet.
  • Keep a damp cloth nearby for quick hand and face wipes.
  • Embrace the mess. It genuinely doesn’t last long, and the developmental benefits are enormous. A ten-minute tidy-up is well worth the learning your child gains.

Safety Considerations

Safety is always my top priority, both in the nursery and when I’m recommending activities to parents. Here are the key things to keep in mind:

  • Always supervise closely. Two-year-olds still explore with their mouths, so never leave them unattended with small items, water, or sand.
  • Check for choking hazards. Make sure any toys or figures you add to sensory trays are large enough not to be swallowed. All our 3D-printed toys are made with young children in mind.
  • Water safety is essential. Even a few centimetres of water can be dangerous. Stay within arm’s reach during any water play activity, including bath time.
  • Use non-toxic materials. Stick to food-safe items like rice, pasta, and oats for filling trays. Our PLA toys are made from plant-based, non-toxic plastic.
  • Watch for allergies. If your child has a gluten intolerance, swap oats and pasta for rice or lentils instead.

Getting Started

You really don’t need much to begin. A shallow tray, some dried rice, and a couple of cups can provide twenty minutes of focused, joyful learning. As you build confidence (yours and your toddler’s!), you can introduce water play, sand, and more adventurous messy play.

All of the toys mentioned in this guide are 3D printed right here in the UK using eco-friendly PLA plastic. They’re lightweight, colourful, and built to withstand enthusiastic toddler play. Happy playing!
